In the last few years, India has moved firmly into focus for patent information users worldwide. A major concern in the past was how to access Indian patent data. The Indian Patent Office (IPO) made efforts to digitise its patent information, and with the launch of its free iPairs (Indian Patent Information Retrieval System) portal has largely met users' basic information needs. To satisfy their more advanced needs, patent searchers may have to look to other providers of Indian data services.
The Clairvolex Intellectual Property Information System (CIPIS) was developed by Clairvolex Knowledge Processes Pvt. Ltd. with a view to providing a user-friendly, professional and integrated search platform for Indian intellectual property information. CIPIS contains modules for Indian patents, designs and trade marks. Data records for patents and designs go back to 1971, data entry for trade marks is currently also under way and will provide records back to 1941. The CIPIS system is updated weekly. Clairvolex stresses that quality control checks are in place to ensure that data are correct and complete.
There are three different search interfaces: "Quick Search" (a single search field), "Advanced Search" (various search fields that can be combined with Boolean operators OR, AND, NOT) and "Expert Search" (command line input to create complex search statements). Search criteria include applicant and inventor names, applicant country, numbers and dates, keywords in title and abstract, patent classification (IPC and Indian classification).
Basic searches in CIPIS are currently free, but users require a fee-based password to display detailed search results or use the advanced functions (including download of full texts, patent watch, status update and file wrapper order).
CIPIS also includes a basic analytical tool that allows users to visualise the search result in graphs with pre-defined parameters (top ten applicants, top ten IPC classes, and patent count vs filing year).
The CIPIS system is available at http://cipis.clairvolex.com.
