Prominence of IP Information as a Tool

December 4, 2009

The transition from Information to Intelligence is necessary, particularly in view of data and information relating to Intellectual Property. Exhaustive information with respect to applications in the domain may be necessary for multifarious purposes including Intellectual Property strategization, white space analysis, examining filling trends and so on.

While IP Information may be abundantly available, the issue that may often be faced is procurement, collation and its consequent use. Most jurisdictions provide a large amount of information, making it accessible to the public domain. However, the accuracy of the same owing to errors coming about in the processing, recording and other operations related to the same may have a crucial bearing. For instance, it is necessary to procure patents and proofread them minutely. Any errors found must necessarily be corrected through a Certificate of Correction, the omission of which brings the validity of the patent itself into question. In this view, it is necessary that IP Information placed on record be accurate.

Enforcement of one's IP rights as well as pre-prosecution stages may also involve a study of available IP information. Further, it is necessary that this information be interpreted to suit one's business intelligence and strategic needs. The potential that IP Information has in terms of the conclusions that it may reveal are numerous - the key lying in using and interpreting the information in the most viable and intelligible manner possible.
